Many of us have been victims of Identity theft. Recovering from it is a nightmare that can linger for months. I’ve had thieves use my name to open up false accounts. I’ve received overdue notices from accounts I didn’t open. I’ve had people steal my identity to charge thousands of dollars to my credit cards.

Trace and I have both LifeLock and Identity Guard apps to secure our finances, but there is another kind of identity theft we need to guard against. There is a thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy our God-given identity and leave us with a counterfeit image of ourselves.
Those training to spot counterfeit currency study real currency so they can detect the counterfeit. They learn to recognize the genuine from the fake. As believers, we must learn to recognize that our true identity comes from what Jesus has done for us, what we have in Him, and what God thinks of us.
False identity comes from what we do, what we have, and what others think of us. It causes us to see ourselves as fearful, timid, weak, impoverished paupers, abandoned, unloved orphans, and victims. Our true identity is that we are secure, prosperous, loved, strong and courageous, and victorious overcomers in Jesus.
Knowing Jesus and His Word about who we are in him frees us from identity theft and liberates us to live out our true identity in Christ. While we each have unique personalities, gifts, and calling, here are some truths from the Word that establish our identity in Jesus that can’t be stolen.
I am in Christ and He is in Me. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20
I have everything I need in God. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of him. 2 Peter 1:3
I am victorious in God. In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. Romans 8:37, 2 Chronicles 20:15b
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10
I am secure in God’s love. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
I am not afraid, alone, or abandoned. I am strong and courageous. The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged . . .” Psalm 118:6, Deuteronomy 31:6,8
